How to Measure

  • With your dog in a sit or stand, take a pliable cloth or plastic measuring tape (no rigid metal ones) and measure the circumference of your dog's neck at the base. The measuring tape should be without slack but have the ability to fit a couple of fingers under the tape. For fluffy dogs, please measure slightly under the coat; no need to measure directly against the skin. Please avoid squeezing too tightly on your dog's neck. If you don’t have a pliable measuring tape, you may use a shoelace and then lay it flat and measure it with a ruler. If you are utilizing a sewing measuring tape, make sure you are measuring starting at "0" and not the plastic end.

    • We always recommend to measure your dog's actual neck size, but If you do measure your dog's current buckle collar as a reference, lay it flat and measure from where the buckle tongue connects to the bar, to the hole where your pet wears its collar. Refer to the red arrows in the photo below. Please be aware that unless the hardware, collar material & thicknesses is the same for the collar being measured vs. the collar being ordered, this method of measuring may yield an inaccurate fit.

Please read these directions carefully, as a measurement instructions for a chain martingale collar are different than other styles:

    • With your dog in a sit or stand, take a pliable cloth or plastic measuring tape (no rigid metal ones) and measure the circumference of your dog's neck at the base (photo "A" below). If you don’t have a cloth measuring tape, use a string and then lay the string flat and measure it with a ruler. The measuring tape should be flush, without slack, and (at most) only a single finger under the tape (prefer no fingers). Please avoid squeezing too tightly on your dog's neck. If you are utilizing a sewing measuring tape, make sure you are measuring starting at "0" and not the plastic end.

    • Next, measure the circumference of the widest part of your dog's head; this is generally just in front of your dog's ears and below their jaw line (as indicated in the "B" photo below). The measuring tape should not be slack, but not squeezing against your dog's head. Again, at most have one finger under the tape, but we prefer no fingers.

    • Submit these two measurements (both 'A' and 'B') when you order. We shall make the necessary adjustments to your provided neck and head measurement to obtain a proper fit of your martingale.

Standard martingales are not adjustable, so please be sure to measure carefully. Be sure to measure your dog and not your dog's current collar. If you have any questions regarding how to measure your dog, don't hesitate to write us and submit photos of your process and we will be happy to help.

If your collar does not fit, your item may be eligible for a return or an exchange. We highly encourage you to visit our Returns & Exchanges section for detailed information regarding our shop policy. Please note that our martingale collars are meant to fit for safety and not training/corrective purposes. This means that our martingales are not designed to be worn "high and tight" like a prong collar.

House and Slip collars will generally fit a bit more loosely than a traditional collar so they may slide off and on over your dog's head. Please be sure to read all of the measuring instructions below, as this collar style is nonadjustable and will be specifically made to your requested size.

    1)  With your dog in a sit or stand, please measure the circumference at the base of your dog's neck ("A" photo) with room to fit a couple fingers under the measuring tape.

    2)  Next, you will want to measure the circumference of the WIDEST part of your dog's head -- this is generally in front of your dog's ears and below their jaw line (as indicated in the "B" photo). Again, you should have enough room to fit a few fingers under the measuring tape. This measurement is imperative, as the circumference of the head of some dogs is larger than their neck.

    3)  Finally, please choose the larger of the two sizes obtained from your "A" and "B" measurements. Is this measurement large enough to comfortably slide the measuring tape onto your dog's neck and back off over their ears? If so, good! If not, adjust the tape measurer accordingly. If your dog is especially sensitive to things sliding off and on over their head and you desire an even more relaxed fit to your collar, please adjust according to the needs of your dog. The size determined in this step will be the Collar Size selected from the drop down menu.

Your collar will be made to the size you select from the dropdown menu. This will be the collar's linear length, not the inner circumference of the collar. Your collar will be made to the size you select from the dropdown menu. If your measurements fall in-between sizes, round up to the nearest 0.5".

This type of collar is not adjustable, so measure carefully and feel free to contact us with any questions prior to purchase.
